Happy Earth Day!

Another Earth Day has rolled around and we all need to get outside and enjoy Earth and all her gifts, especially the birds.

In my yard today, the Blue Grosbeaks have arrived and so has a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the first of the year.

Is this the same little female that has nested in my yard these last few years? No way to know really, but I'm happy to see her anyway.

The male RTHs are still passing through as well and now that a female is here, there are constant noisy chases around the yard.

A male takes a sip from a bright canna bloom, a favorite of the hummers.

In honor of this Earth Day, the National Audubon Society has published its ten ways that you can make a difference to migrating birds. By following Audubon's suggestions, we can all be better friends to the birds and we all need to do that because the birds need all the help they can get.

HAPPY EARTH DAY AND REMEMBER TO GIVE THE BIRDS SOME LOVE!

  1. Great post! Happy Earth day to you:) Saw my first male RT hummer the other day. I'm enjoying watching the baby tufted titmouses, baby cardinals and baby finches come to my fountain. What fun! I have one mother cardinal who is feeding a baby cowbird - Ugh!

    1. It's easy to get upset with the cowbirds, Steph, but I always try to remind myself that this is the strategy that Mother Nature has given them for survival.

    2. You are right about the cowbirds. I don't mind as long as they don't interfere with the Cardinal population - and I don't think they have:)

I was wondering if it was to late in the season to put up a Chickadee nesting box? I also want to put up a Screech owl box.

    3. Well, Steph, the chickadees in my yard have settled down already but there could well be some around that haven't found a home yet, so I say, go for it! I would like to put up a Screech Owl box also. Maybe next winter. I think it's probably a little late to attract them for this spring, but, again, what could it hurt to install a box and hope?
